Construction is underway at the West Falmouth Library and is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2017. The addition and renovations were designed by Brown Lindquist Fenuccio & Raber Architects, Inc. The construction manager is Dellbrook | JK Scanlan. This project is made possible by the donors to the
West Falmouth Library capital campaign.

While the project will cause temporary disruptions, ultimately the Library will be more easily accessible and better able to accommodate events and vital library services for the community.

The project involves the construction of an addition on the southeast side of the property. This 2,100-square-foot, two-story addition, nestled into the hillside, will make the library fully accessible with a ground-level entrance from the parking lot, accessible elevator, accessible restrooms, and common stairwell. Vegetation will be removed and the landscape will be altered as part of the excavation required for the foundation of the addition, but fresh plantings will be added at the completion of the project.

The project also includes a renovation of the 1972 addition as well as a new deck and terrace that will complement the garden on the north side. The original 1896 building will undergo extensive restoration and repair work while retaining its beautiful, historical character, which is treasured by all who visit.

The parking lot will be smaller throughout the construction period to allow space for staging, and caution should be exercised when entering and exiting due to the presence of construction vehicles.

Currently, the library has a mechanical lift that is used for handicapped access into the building. This lift will need to be removed early in construction, around September 19.

To ensure that handicapped patrons can still access materials from the West Falmouth Library, items may be ordered for pickup at alternative local library locations. As a member of the CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing) network, the West Falmouth Library allows items to be delivered or returned to any of the other CLAMS member libraries, including the Falmouth Public Library and its North Falmouth and East Falmouth branches as well as the Woods Hole, Bourne, and Mashpee libraries.

All of these CLAMS libraries have handicapped accessible entrances. Additionally, the Falmouth Public Library offers homebound delivery service and those interested may call the Falmouth Public Library homebound delivery librarian at
508-457-2555 ext. 2910 for more information. Patrons can also easily order materials online using their CLAMS accounts or they may call the West Falmouth Library at 508-548-4709 and the staff will order items on their behalf.

The library’s two early literacy programs for children will be held at Turning Pointe Dance Studio in East Falmouth, which provides handicapped accessibility. The programs are scheduled to begin the week of September 12 on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Check the library’s website for programming announcements and notices regarding short-term closures due to certain construction phases such as the installation of the new septic and electrical systems. Information and updates will be posted on the Library website.
