Author Talk with Nathaniel Philbrick
Celebrated author of Mayflower and In the Heart of the Sea Nathaniel Philbrick visits the library on Wednesday, August 6th at 5pm, for a book talk and signing. Philbrick will discuss his memoir Second Wind: The Story of a Sailor’s Comeback, a charming recounting of his attempt to recapture a national sailing championship he’d won at twenty-two. Books will be available for purchase. This event is free; register below. We invite you to register for a free ticket with an optional donation that will benefit both West Falmouth Library and Chapoquoit Yacht Club. This event is co-presented with Chapoquoit Yacht Club. Thank you to Eight Cousins Books for providing the books.
About the author: Nathaniel Philbrick, the National Book Award-winning author of eight New York Times bestsellers, learned to sail on West Falmouth Harbor. He met his wife Melissa Douthart, who volunteered as a child at the West Falmouth Library, when they were both sailing instructors at the Chapoquoit Yacht Club in 1974. Philbrick, a former Sunfish North American champion, will talk about the importance of sailing to his life as a historian in writing books ranging from In the Heart of the Sea to his trilogy about the American Revolution as well as his memoir, Second Wind.
About Chapoquoit Yacht Club: Founded in 1903, CYC is dedicated to sailing instruction and racing for families in the wider West Falmouth community. The club was recently reorganized as a 501(c)(3) with open membership for youths and adults, offering training in small boat handling and seamanship as well as weekly racing in Beetles and Sakonnets on the waters of West Falmouth Harbor and Buzzards Bay. This year is a transformational one for the club as it moves close to West Falmouth Village with the hopes of providing greater access to sailing for the local community. After 121 years operating off Chapoquoit Island, CYC is planning for its second wind as a true community sailing organization.
