Poet Jane Huffman Workshop & Reading
Small group poetry workshop Sunday, April 19 1-3 p.m. with Jane Huffman, author of Public Abstract, winner of the 2023 American Poetry Review Honickman First Book Prize. Jane is a PhD student in literary arts and dissertation fellow at the University of Denver and has an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and elsewhere.
In this generative workshop, students will begin with discussing some examples of contemporary poetry that test the boundaries of what a “formal poem” can be. No previous knowledge or experience with poetry is necessary: we will explore this work together as a group. Then, responding to prompts provided by the instructor, students will write original poems (or at least get them started!) that innovate in both form and content. Students will be invited to share their work with the group, but this won’t be required. Come prepared for a fun and supportive session. Stay following the workshop for a reading and conversation at 3:30 p.m.
